10 Choices Successful Couples Make: The Secret to love That Lasts a Lifetime




Preface-"I am not married. I chose to read and review this book, to learn practical tools to help me navigate marriage if I decide to marry."  In the "10 Choices Successful Couples Make," Dr. Ron Welch, clinical psychologist and marriage counselor outlines 10 Choices Successful Couples Make, whether the reader is single and seeking advice on what being married is like, or the reader is married and wanting to reestablish and cultivate a marriage Dr. Welch will give Biblical tools to do just that.  Dr. Welch says the first chose a successful couples makes is They choose to love for better or worse. "Choosing to love is the day to day decisions couples make."(p.15). For example, What to watch on TV, What to eat for dinner, is according to Dr. Welch this is when love truly grows. 2nd, Successful Couples make a good decisions. They compromise. For example,They decide to place a elder parent in a nursing care facility part time, and split up the care at their home. Another aspect of making good decisions is trade offs. The woman chooses the movie one day, and the man the other. And finally, with big choices such as, moving the person most affected gets to chose. For example, the wife gets offered a job in another state and the couple fight about moving, but decide it is best because the consequences out-way not making the choice to move. Successful couples chose to believe in hope. Achieving small success/and big ones. Recognizing conflict and avoiding   it based on past experiences. 3rd, They choose to communicate. Active listening. 4th, They choose to communicate positive.  5th, They choose to let go of old baggage. From childhood and past relationships. 6th, They choose to forgive, They say I am sorry. They repent, They are accountable, and they do not expect things to change quickly. It takes time. 7th, They choose to forgive the big stuff- Affairs, money issues, lies, and broken promises. 8th, They choose to be unselfish. 9th, They choose the us model in marriage. 10th, They choose to challenge unspoken truths Assumptions in a marriage. Finally, Dr. Welch says Successful couples choose to love forever. They choose to work at their marriage, nurture it, make sure it is first with God at the center.
