John's Letters: An Exegetical Guide for Preaching and Teaching for Kregel Academic

Professor Herbert Bateman, IV And Aaron C. Peer's Textbook Commentary of John's Letters (First John, Second John and Third John)  is written for a student reader who is in Seminary, a Pastor, or a Teacher in a Pastoral Program or a Theology Professor. It is not written for a Christian  who does not have at least  some Theological background, or the reader who reads the Bible more than once a day. Professor Bateman IV, and Pastor Peer do provide in the first section of 1 John, a basic  Exegetical Interpretation  Introduction to the letter. For example, It was written during a crisis. Professor Bateman says "The letter opens with John making an authoritative  message that Jesus is indeed a living human person." (Bateman p. 60). "The second half of 1 John is about the good news, which is God's love. Also, John is clear about Jesus teaching as a human Messiah,(Bateman, IV p. 61).  "John then returns to the theme of mutual love with first a calling to love others, because God loves us." Furthermore, John states again God is love and those that love show it through a relationship with God." (Bateman IV, p. 61). "John then identifies the following facts, anyone who believes in Jesus as the father loves God and family members, obeys the Ten Commandments, and has victory over The Evil One(Devil). (Bateman IV, p. 61).  And has faith in Jesus." John closes the letter of 1 John with a twofold epilogue: to build confidence on prayer, and about God's protection of those who belong to him followed by a command: don't worship idols." (Bateman IV, p. 61)
The middle portion of the textbook, goes into a lengthily discussion of the Greek Translation of John's letters( 1, 2, and 3).  John opens his second  letter with a "heartfelt Greeting to the elder of the elect lady and her children, whom I love in truth." And closes his first letter with a desire to come face to face with you and that our joy might be complete." He opens his third and final letter with a Gretting and a prayer "The elder in Gaius, and ends with John wanting to write many more things, but he would rather see them immediately ." My thoughts on this textbook are it is like I said better suited for the reader who is attending a Pastorloal Program or a Theology Professor not an layman. I did however appericate the Translation Commentary on John's Letters, First, Second, and Third.
