"John The Baptist"

Prologue: John Chapter 1  verse 6

There was a man sent from God named John. 7- He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that all would believe through him. 8-He was not the light, but he came to testify about the light 9-The true light "that gives light to everyone" was coming to the world.

John testified concerning him and exclaimed, "This was the one whom I said was coming after me ranks ahead of me."

"John the Baptist Testimony"

John Chapter 1 verse 19

When the Jews from Jerusalem sent preachers to ask him, "Who are you?"

21- Are you Elijah?

They asked him

22-No. Who are you then?

23- He said "I am a voice of one crying out in the wilderness Make straight the way of The Lord just as Isaiah said.

"John The Baptist's Ministry'

John Chapter 3 verse 23

John was near a spring near Salem. 24- He had not been thrown in prison yet 25- A dispute between John's disciples arose and a Jew about purification

26- So they came to John Who was with you baptizing everyone who came to see him. 27- John responded No one can receive anything unless it's been given from Heaven 30- He must increase I must decrease.

"John's Message"

Luke Chapter 3 Verse 7

He said to the crowd

Brood of Vipers!!

Who warned you to flee from The coming wrath.

8- Therefore produce fruit consistent with repentance.  And don't say we are Abraham's  9- The ax is already at the root of the trees. every root that doesn't produce good fruit is cut down and thrown out.

10- The crowd asked what should we do then to be baptized?

11- He replied The one who has two shirts must share with someone Who has none and The one who has some food must do the same. 12- The tax collectors also came to be baptized What shall we do?

13- He told them don't collect anymore than what you've been allowed. 14- The soldiers asked What shall we do? Don't take money by force. 15- The people asked if John was The Messiah and he said I baptize with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.

19- But when John rebuked Herod he locked him in prison.

"John's Death"

Mark Chapter 6 verse 14

Herod heard about John. He gave orders for him to be beheaded on account of John called him out his affair with his brother's wife. 18- It is not lawful. 19- So Herod held a grudge but couldn't kill him because the multitudes would be upset.  21- There was a banquet for Herod's nobles and 24- the girl went to him and asked for John's head on a platter. 27- Immediately to the king sent for the person who would kill John  to bring John's head on a platter, so he went and beheaded him in prison.

29- When the disciples heard about it, they took the body and the head and laid it in a tomb.

John Chapter 1 verse 6

Pro;loge: Commentary

"He was sent to bear witness John's ministry was well known. 10- The world didn't know Jesus and this shows how much the world has fallen."

"I am not the Messiah. John didn't claim to be. Are you Elijah? The crowd asked. Because of his personality and wild clothes and because he came before the day of the Lord It might seem easy for the preachers to think so."

(Guzik, David)

John's real function was to point people to Jesus.

"John the baptist' ministry"

John Chapter 3 verse 23

John was baptized 7 miles south of Bethsham.

A fight  between John and his disciples over purification commentary"

"John's baptism had a personal element because he did it personally. The Jewish leaders may have objected to it and how he did it." All who were coming to see John were fickle and he didn't let this bother him." John's ministry was from God. He must decrease and God must increase." He did waht God called him to do, even though, Jesus gained more attention and he less"

"John's message to the people  Commentary"

John Chapter 3 verse 7

Brood of vipers!! John's message wasn't soft.

"Good fruit bears good repentance.  The ax  that is laid on the tree is cut down at the root and the bad is thrown into the fire and burned." The Jews of that time believed Abraham was merited to bear witness to good fruit." John wasn't unreasonable asking the people to bear good fruit. But a man cannot bear it. Jesus is the only one."

"John's Message to certain  people"

Luke Chapter 3 verse 10- 14 Commentary"

The Tax collectors- What shall we do to be baptized?

conduct yourselves fairly and honestly."

Do not cheat people."

"John points to a greater baptism Commentary"

Luke Chapter 3 verses 15-18

"I baptize with water.

"The one that is coming after me will baptize with the Holy Spirit."  The one with a winnowing fan in his hand ( a fan used to blow off a current of  air through grain)  He will thoroughly clean his threshing floor and gather the wheat and burn the unalienable fire." "The Messiah  will divide the truth from the false."

"John's death Commentary"

Mark Chapter 6 verse 17

Herod told the girl whatever you want I will give you. The girl asked her mother and she said John the Baptist's head on a platter." John called Herod out on his affair with his brother's wife. So Herod wanted to kill him, but didn't because he was afraid of John's followers being upset." The king didn't refuse his wife though and ordered the person who would kill John,  to behead him in prison. He did so. Herod had John's head in his possession. When John's followers heard about it, they took the body and the head and placed it in a tomb." They wanted John's life to be remembered in the best way." (David Guzik.)
