Suffering Is Never for Nothing

The late Ms. Elisabeth Elliot's first husband was working in the missionary field in Ecuador when he was killed by the Indians. 2 years later, Ms. Elliot went to live with them. 16 years later, she remarried a theologian named Addison Leitch. 2 years later,  he passed away of cancer. Ms. Elliot asked the all too familiar question Where was Jesus in all of this? Why didn't he stop it? Why didn't he keep it from happening?  John 16:33, "You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world." (Christian Standard Translation) The thesis of what Ms. Elliot is saying is simple People aren't immune from suffering. Be strong Jesus is saying Because I have overcome the world. The cross overcame the world and this is why we may endure a hardship. But still, it is not as bad as what Jesus went through. Being arrested, being nailed to a cross, not to mention a crown of thrones being shoved on your head. Being spat on, mocked, beaten and while your mom watches in the crowd her son die. That is suffering. That is heartbreak. Yes, losing a baby, mom, dad, or any important person in one's life is suffering, but watching your son being murdered and not being able to stop it is heartbreaking to its core. Ms. Elliot had to explain to her young daughter her daddy passed away. The suffering is so deep down to the bones of these ladies that "I am so sorry" isn't going to cut it. This pain is raw and the hurt is real and will not go away.  Ms. Elliot's husband will never come back. he is gone. The finality in that statement is also suffering. Knowing the person you have loved for all your life, and spent happy memories together will be gone forever. Is sad. Still, there is hope. Even in death. Ms. Elliot healed and in time became courageous and her faith did not waver. "Weeping may endure in the night, but joy comes in the morning." There is a new day. There is rest button. It will take time to get passed the suffering it takes time. The thesis of Ms. Elliot's suffering is Jesus is the encouragement when suffering put you in a corner with no hope.
